Germ Line Therapy When I was a student in elementary school I was first told about genetics. I was told that traits are passed from parents to offspring and that each parent contributes equally. Someday, I was told, parents will be able to go down to the corner drug store and pick out what kind of baby they want. They could pick things like blue eyes, high intelligence and could even pick out the sex of their child. At the time I was being told this I believed that I would see it in my lifetime. I expected that by the time I was having children I would be able to pick their traits. I was especially excited to think that my children would not inherit my genetic disease. I wasn’t quite sure how all of this would work, but I was curious to find out. As I progressed in my scholastic career I went on to learn more about genetics. I finally decided that genetics was the field of study that I wished to pursue in college. Once in college I learned that determining your child’s traits was not as easy as going down to the corner drug store and taking a pill, as I had imagined when I was a child. In fact determining most traits, such as eye and hair color was probably not even in the foreseeable future. What was involved I couldn’t even begin to understand as a freshman in college. The more I understood about molecular biology, the less feasible trait determination seemed. Then along came Dolly, the cloned sheep. For some time scientists have been pursuing the idea of germ line therapy. Germ line therapy is essentially alterations made to the germ cells. Germ cells are eggs, sperm and early embryos (Henzig 1998). Any manipulation to the germ line would be transferred to future generations. Any corrections made at this stage would not need to be made again in that person’s descendants. Traditional gene therapy on adult subjects is called somatic cell therapy. This type of gene therapy must be repeated for each affected person in succeeding generations (Svitil 1998). Dolly was an important discovery because she was the first animal to be created from an adult differentiated cell. This cloning technique made germ line research much easier. Adult cells are more abundant than embryonic cells, and there should be no objection to doing research on differentiated cells from an adult donor.

Learning Experience at Texas

Texas A&M was certainly an experience different from anything I encountered before. I surely have had my share of studying in high school – in fact, it seemed at times that I had had more than I really wanted. The semester at Texas A&M, on the contrary, left me eager for more, seeking new revelations, interesting discoveries, meetings with friends and greater scope. It has also left me with a better understanding of the world so exquisitely made by our Creator and appreciation of its wonders. Education is certainly no small feat, and one needs real inspiration to get through the challening workload of math problems, English essays, and learning new concepts and ideas. The time I spent at Texas A&M not only helped me improve my educational background, equipping me with instruments to approach complex things, but also boosted my inspiration to overcome challenges and move toward my professional goals, step by step, each day making these goals come closer. I know now what I see as my main step: it is the completion of the Bachelor’s program at Texas Christian University. Its program is tailor-made to fit my personal needs and will help me move on in life. Texas A&M was to me a great lesson in the value of education. The time spent there also left me with a more serious attitude toward college studies. Being a Hurricane Katrina student, I for a time lived with the sense that there are more important problems to get over in this world than studies, and my mind was often focused on other things. This naturally affected my performance. As time went by, however, I could not remain indifferent to the intense learning process that was going on around. I learned that getting engrossed in studies was a good way to cope with shock, and that being in possession of valuable information makes one better prepared to conquer problems and challenges and take control of life. My strong Christian faith was a continuous source of inspiration in my studies at Texas A&M. It was my Walk with God that gave me the strength to master a new environment, improve my educational potential, and improve my educational performance. My prayers were a source of consolation in times of need and provided inspiration when I had to make another leap forward in my learning. I cannot underestimate the support of my friends. The environment at Texas A&M turned out to be ideal for establishing friendly contacts, and I at once felt encouragement and attention of other students who were willing to help me, given my traumatic background as a Hurricane Katrina student. I see human communication as an inalienable part of the education process. It is one feature that makes it inherently appealing to a sociable person like myself, eager to absorb knowledge through collective learning effort. My studies at Texas A&M were only a springboard for my future academic endeavors. In fact, I strongly believe that from this point on, I am about to embark on a lifelong learning adventure. I trust the words of Robert M. Hutchins who said â€Å"The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.† I hope that college will give me a strong background from which to see and learn new things, quickly putting them in context. Such learning can never stop because a human mind is always receptive to new and new turns of events that swirl around. I believe that education obtained at Texas Christian University will prove to be an ideal foundation from which to begin my professional career. With its powerful Christian focus and impressive academic strength, the university will be an ideal place for me to turn myself into a really educated person. The university is an excellent opportunity to reach my goals and aspirations in life. I hope to get a chance to prove my worthiness of this great academic and Christian tradition receiving a place in TCU’s program.

I found the book Jane Eyre very interesting, and exciting to read. It was very thought provoking and I found the themes in this novel to be relevant to society today. One issue that we see in Jane Eyre is that of feminism. The issue of female independence in the novel is of great importance. The issue of feminism is still relevant to todays society. We see instances all around the world where women are continually trying to achieve the same status as men. One example of this is the Womens Liberation Front. Therefore, the theme of feminism in Jane Eyre is something we can relate to today. Another theme present in Jane Eyre is that of social hierarchy. Jane Eyre is critical of Victorian Englands strict social hierarchy. Jane is a figure of extreme tension for the characters around her. It is still relevant today as we see instances around the world where social class is an issue. I do not feel this is a major issue in the west, but in countries such as India, and other eastern countries, the social hierarchy is somewhat a very big issue. Those who are of a low social class can be abused and violated, and are not given the same rights as those of a higher class. This is why I feel the issue of social hierarchy in Jane Eyre is most definitely relevant to todays society. The book Jane Eyre, covered many aspects of themes which were relevant in the Victorian Era, and I feel that the author has successfully tied these themes into the story. The story has many strengths, and very few weaknesses. One strength is that Jane, as a character, is portrayed well, we have a clear understanding of her opinions and beliefs. The author has made Jane an interesting and thought provoking character, and she questions beliefs and morals that others of her era take for granted, and it is interesting to read how she adapts to fit in with society for instance, when tutoring Adele, she must be polite. It is riveting to see the reactions she receives from others such as when she is locked in the Red Room by Mrs. Reed, and what manner she deals with them. Not only is Jane herself portrayed well as a character, but every single character in the novel has significance and we can usually see clearly the characters role/purpose in the novel. The characters are believable. I would not consider this as a weakness as I liked the old fashioned style of writing, but I think this aspect of the book may not appeal to a minority of readers. Another aspect of which may stop people reading this book is that it is a very long book. I myself do not consider this as a weakness, as every chapter of the book left me in suspense, and wanting more. Throughout the whole duration of the book, I felt I was on the edge, and it excited me. I didnt find any parts of the book unnecessary or dull, and this is why I do not consider the length of the novel to be a weakness. In the novel I found I sympathised with the character Jane the most. I feel that Jane is condemned by society for being different, and questioning the beliefs and opinions around her. While living with Mrs. Reed, she is the subject of much taunting, and finds it difficult. I think that she may feel that she is not valued as a person in the household, and once again we see issues of social class. I also discovered inspiration from this novel. Jane has a firm grasp of her ethics and is strong minded. She says, I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will. The courage and independence Jane possessed astounded me. This book would be perfect for those who love romantic classics. Another inspiration came as I read the scene when Jane leaves Thornfield Hall, her home, love, family and friends. She sacrifices all to take the moral high road, yet eventually comes out on top and is happy. Jane possesses will, virtue and purity, and is very admirable. She proves that a woman can find herself and be someone in a world dominated by men. This book is perfect for those who love romantic classics. To conclude, Jane Eyre is a story of tragedy, love and deception, and I found it exciting, gripping, and interesting. I found the themes introduced in the novel were very thought-provoking, and have a lot of relevance in todays society. I think the authors purpose throughout the book was to provide an interesting story which dealt with issues which were relevant in the Victorian Era, and I feel that Charlotte Bronte has successfully done this.
